Tourism in Brazil- Have you ever heard about São Paulo?

It is common for tourists in Brazil to go to places like Rio de Janeiro, Bahia (Northeast beaches) or the Amazon. Tourists and foreigners usually think Brazil is just a land of rainforests and paradisiac beaches but they don ´t suspect that there is a strong urban life in Brazil as in Europe or the USA.

The 2014 World Cup showed foreigners that Brazil is big and diverse. I ´d like to talk about one of this exciting urban places:

São Paulo city. São Paulo is the home of many nationalities, mainly Italians, that in the XIX century came to work on coffee farms in the countryside.

But not just Italians adopted São Paulo as a home, the Japanese, the Germans, the Dutch and other people from all around the world became São Paulo ´s citizens. This miscegenation changed the city way. Today São Paulo is Brazil ´s capital of gastronomy, economy, culture and diversity (pay attention: Brazil ´s official capital is Brasília, not São Paulo or Buenos Aires, Argentina).

Gastronomy

Chefs from all around the world came to São Paulo to open restaurants. You can find Thai, Italian, French, German, American, Japanese, Arab, Latin American and so forth cuisine in this big city, one of the biggest around the world.

The Brazilian traditional food is a big deal too. Rich in vegetables, grain (specially beans), beef, fish, chicken, pasta and fruits, traditional Brazilian food is a mix of many cultures. Today the food trucks are coming to the streets of São Paulo too, a trend that increases the meal options.

Another trend of the city is the burger diner that cooks traditional recipes or mixes local tastes to bring different food experiences.

There is an international circuit of high gastronomy in the city too with awarded chefs like Alex Atala.

Culture

The cultural vein is lively in São Paulo with a lot of museums, galleries, concert halls, theaters, cinemas and cultural street exhibitions.

An interesting example of this cultural Power is the Graffitti or street art. São Paulo was elected one of the best places to see street art in the world.

There is an amazing alternative theater circuit downtown, with small companies performing plays for a selected and restricted audience.

If you like to play games “Ludus Luderia” is a theme bar specialized in board games. The waiters, while serving drinks and snacks, teach the clients how to play the board games.
Book stores are a great deal in São Paulo with sections dedicated to imported books, with armchairs to read some titles (like a library) and coffee shops.

Diversity and the gay parade

The gay parade, on Paulista Avenue, is one of the biggest happenings in the world and the symbol of diversity and tolerance. The event that occurs every year attracts tourists from all around the world and grows the city economy.

Augusta street is the symbol of diversity culture and attracts many ‘tribes’ . With alternative cinemas, bars, pubs and venues you can meet people from different social classes and gender options.

The traditional family can enjoy the city with plays, cinemas, restaurants, diners, parks and a huge quantity of options.

In this brief article I tried to show a little piece of São Paulo, a great place to visit in Brazil, very different from “the common tourist attractions”, a fascinating option for your next vacation trip.
